Hyde-Smith pens legislation creating federal penalties for attacks on hospital employees
SUMMARY: U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) is leading the effort to establish federal criminal penalties for assaulting hospital employees amid rising violence against healthcare workers. The Save Healthcare Workers Act, introduced with Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), aims to deter violence by authorizing federal prosecution of offenders. Studies show high rates of violence against healthcare workers, with 77% of emergency staff encountering violence in 2021 and 81.6% of nurses experiencing workplace violence in 2023. The bill proposes fines and up to 10 years in prison for assaults, matching protections for flight attendants. The act is supported by healthcare organizations and has a House companion bill.
