Mississippi Stories: Dr. Alyssa Killebrew
In this episode of Mississippi Stories, Mississippi Today Editor-at-Large Marshall Ramsey sits down with Dr. Alyssa Killebrew to talk about her life and incredible resilience in the face of crushing loss and grief and her work to help kids work past their trauma.
Dr. Killebrew knows about working past trauma. In December of 2021, Dr. Killebrew's longtime husband Keath, a successful farmer, died in a plane crash in South America. This came after the couple had recently lost their unborn child due to COVID-19. You will be inspired by her incredible strength and positive outlook. She talks about her and Keath's creation of a camp called SEK Intensives to honor their youngest daughter and help both adolescents and their parents deal with life's challenges.
Dr. Killebrew is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (No. 54-946), a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor. In 2005, she earned a Master's degree of Education (M.Ed.) in Community Counseling from Delta State University. In 2008, she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology from Jackson State University and completed a residency at Valley Mental Health in Salt Lake City, Utah. She completed her post-doctoral year with the Mississippi Department of Corrections, where she was the Mental Health Director of the Youthful Offender Unit.
She started her Ridgeland, Mississippi-based private practice, Killebrew Psychological Services, LLC, in 2016, focusing her services primarily on mood disorders, PTSD, addiction and personality disorders. She specializes in Biofeedback, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and Modified Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

Jackson residents encouraged to prepare for Thursday’s storms
SUMMARY: Severe weather is expected in Jackson metro on May 8, urging citizens to be prepared for strong winds and hail. The City Council introduced a Severe Limb and Tree Risk Ordinance to report dangerous limbs and trees. Councilman Ashby Foote advised reaching out to council members for safety hazards. Over 100 trees fell in Northeast Jackson last month, causing damage and highlighting the importance of having good insurance for storm-related damages. Public Works and Solid Waste will monitor the storms closely. Preparation, awareness, and reporting potential dangers are emphasized to ensure safety during severe weather events.

Crews close Jackson street due to large sinkhole
SUMMARY: JXN Water announced a temporary road closure on Paden Street in Jackson, Mississippi due to a large sinkhole. Crews are currently working to repair a sewer line on Paden Street between Cummins Street and West McDowell Road after residents voiced concerns about the sinkhole and foul smells. The repairs began on May 8 and are expected to continue until complete. Patricia Barnes, a resident in the area, expressed gratitude for the repairs. JXN Water officials stated that the road will remain closed until repairs are finished.

Squatted vehicles will soon be banned in Mississippi
SUMMARY: House Bill 349, signed by Governor Tate Reeves, will ban “squatted vehicles” in Mississippi beginning July 1, 2024. These are trucks or vehicles with raised front fenders higher than the rear fenders. Violating the law will result in a misdemeanor, fines, and possible license suspension. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety highlights safety concerns and the importance of maintaining visibility on the roads. The goal is to promote safe driving habits and ensure the safety of everyone sharing the road. The department emphasizes that safety is their top priority and will continue to enforce laws to keep roads safe.
