Wayne Carr wins race for Mississippi Public Service Commissioner in the Southern District
SUMMARY: Mississippi's Public Service Commission will have a new commissioner for the Southern District, Wayne Carr, who defeated incumbent Dane Maxwell in Tuesday's election. The Public Service Commission regulates telecommunications, electric, gas, water, and sewer utilities. Carr, a developer and contractor, plans to use his experience to keep utility bills as manageable as possible. However, he acknowledges the challenges, including an aging grid and supply issues exacerbated by COVID-19. Additionally, the community also faces tornadoes and hurricanes, further complicating the situation. Carr emphasizes the need to address these issues and ensure affordability and reliability for residents.

Local shrimpers say conditions not yet ideal for 2024 season
SUMMARY: Many shrimpers from the coast are heading west this weekend as Louisiana's inshore shrimp season opened on Thursday, while Mississippi waters remain closed. Min Trong, who sells shrimp from his van in Long Beach on weekends, is preparing to open a seafood store. He notes that for the second consecutive year, shrimping conditions have been less than ideal, driving prices down. Factors like excessive freshwater and wind are affecting shrimp availability. Trong anticipates Mississippi's shrimp season to open around mid-June but felt last year's season started too early. Shrimp prices have remained low for the past two years.
Minh Troung and other shrimpers say it'll be a few weeks before conditions are right for shrimping in the Mississippi Sound.
