SUMMARY: One of three former Memphis police officers, Demetrius Haley, will remain in custody until sentencing after being convicted in federal court for crimes related to Tyree Nichols’ beating death. A federal judge denied Haley’s release due to the violent nature of his charges, which include obstruction of justice and unreasonable force. In contrast, co-defendants Tarius Bean and Justin Smith were granted house arrest while awaiting sentencing. All three officers were present in court, shackled and in jumpsuits. Sentencing for the officers is scheduled for January 2025, as Nichols’ family awaits a state trial for further proceedings.

SUMMARY: The man convicted for the 2018 Antioch Waffle House mass shooting, Travis Ranking, is requesting a new trial. His defense attorneys argue he was legally insane during the shooting and unable to form intent for first-degree murder. Currently serving life in prison, Ranking’s defense claims he was denied a fair chance to present evidence of his mental illness. Prosecutors maintain the attack was calculated, not due to insanity. Mental health experts testified Ranking suffers from schizophrenia and neurocognitive deficits, describing him as delusional and paranoid, believing Waffle House patrons were CIA operatives targeting him.
