Organization offering free swimming lessons in Jackson
SUMMARY: An organization is advocating for water safety following the recent drowning of a 15-year-old at Clinton Family YMCA. The incident highlights the dangers of pools, especially as summer approaches. The CDC reports drowning deaths have increased by 500 annually since 2020, emphasizing that basic swim lessons can save lives. However, many avoid lessons due to high costs, usually around $100. Barnett Taylor, Swimming Coordinator for 100 Black Men Incorporated, offers free swimming lessons to youths aged 8-18 in Mississippi, focusing particularly on African American children who often face difficulties finding accessible swimming programs.
