This time of year can be deadly for homeless individuals
SUMMARY: Temperatures are dropping to near freezing, posing a threat to the homeless population in Tupelo, Mississippi. Two homeless individuals died while trying to stay warm. Organizations like The Salvation Army are offering warm shelter and meals to those in need, but not all homeless individuals are taking advantage of these resources. One homeless woman, Ronda Holmes, shared her experience of sleeping at a library and farmers market. Despite the danger of using portable burners for heat, some still rely on them. A deadly fire in a homeless camp is under investigation. Community organizations like All Saints Episcopal Church are also providing support to the homeless during freezing temperatures.
WTVA reporters Jake White and Daniella Oropeza visited a homeless camp on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at the corner of Highway 45 and Main Street in Tupelo.
