Senate dismisses two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security secretary, ending trial
SUMMARY: The Senate has voted to dismiss the impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas regarding his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. Both articles of impeachment, one for “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law,” and another for “breach of trust,” were dismissed as unconstitutional. The attempt to remove Mayorkas led by House Republicans faced criticism for not meeting the bar for high crimes and misdemeanors required for removal. Despite arguments for a full trial, Democrats considered the move to impeach as political, especially during a presidential election year with border security as a key issue. Democrats hold a majority in the Senate, making conviction unlikely.

Mississippi governor deploying national guard troops to Washington, D.C.
SUMMARY: Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves approved deploying 200 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., backing President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of the city’s police force and surge of federal agents. Trump’s move follows rising violent crime, including the recent assault of a government employee and last year’s fatal carjacking of former official Mike Gill. Reeves said the Guard will help “restore law and order” and ensure public safety. Trump has 30 days of emergency control but may extend it through a national emergency. D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb is suing over the takeover. Other GOP governors are also sending troops.
