Former Mississippi school financial secretary pleads guilty to embezzlement
SUMMARY: Dana Walker, the former financial secretary at H.W. Byers High School in Jackson, Miss., pled guilty to embezzling $39,471.70 in school activity funds between August 2020 and February 2022. She was initially arrested in February 2022 by Marshall County School District Police, and the case was later investigated by the State Auditor's Office. Walker collected funds from students and staff for items like senior dues, athletic uniforms, and fundraisers, but failed to properly document and deposit these funds. Sentencing is scheduled for August 13, 2024. Suspected fraud can be reported to the State Auditor's Office online or by phone.
