The 2020 election saw record-high voter turnout, largely due to COVID-19, with significant use of mail-in ballots and early voting, as noted by Dr. Brian Shoup from MSU. In Mississippi, the turnout rate was 60.2%. Shoup attributes higher turnout to the political affiliation becoming a stronger part of individuals’ identities and suggests social media’s role in engaging younger voters. Early voting has increased, although legal changes may delay counting those votes. In contrast, turnout was lower in the 2016 election.
