Return of freight rail service to Wayne County considered
SUMMARY: Leaders of the East Mississippi rail authority aim to reestablish a railroad system in Wesboro, connecting five counties for the first time since disconnection in the 1980s. This $400 million project could revitalize transportation, create over 6,000 jobs, and support industries like forestry, grain, poultry, and construction. Improved rail infrastructure would facilitate movement to ports around Mobile, Gulfport, Pascagoula, and New Orleans. Transportation Director Charles Busby emphasized the urgency to accelerate the project, which has received initial funding. However, the projected start date is nearly a decade away, indicating a long-term commitment to revitalizing the area’s economy.
