Interview: Purple Pinkie Promise project aims to end polio
SUMMARY: The Rotary Club of Tupelo is a civic organization focused on community support and raising funds to eradicate polio. Their initiative, the Purple Pinky Project, started in 2017 by partnering with Dunkin Donuts and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, raising over $7 million for polio eradication. The club encourages both members and the community to order $25 boxes of donuts, which generate $375 each for the Polio Foundation through matching contributions. They aim to collect 120 boxes locally, part of a larger goal of $1.5 million across participating clubs. Orders are due by Friday, and the club seeks to raise 50 more boxes.

Return of freight rail service to Wayne County considered
SUMMARY: Leaders of the East Mississippi rail authority aim to reestablish a railroad system in Wesboro, connecting five counties for the first time since disconnection in the 1980s. This $400 million project could revitalize transportation, create over 6,000 jobs, and support industries like forestry, grain, poultry, and construction. Improved rail infrastructure would facilitate movement to ports around Mobile, Gulfport, Pascagoula, and New Orleans. Transportation Director Charles Busby emphasized the urgency to accelerate the project, which has received initial funding. However, the projected start date is nearly a decade away, indicating a long-term commitment to revitalizing the area’s economy.
