New Orleans old Six Flags site will be demolished soon
SUMMARY: The abandoned Six Flags theme park in New Orleans East, closed for nearly 20 years after Hurricane Katrina, may soon be redeveloped. Residents are skeptical due to past failed attempts, expressing cautious optimism about the new “Bayou Paradise” project. Kenny, a longtime local, emphasizes that they’ll believe it when they see construction begin. Troy Henry, leading the redevelopment, outlines a phased plan with demolition expected in 30 to 60 days and construction of a sports complex and hotels starting in early 2024. The complete redevelopment is projected for 2027, promising positive changes for the community.

Local Business Affected by Tariffs
SUMMARY: As tariffs imposed mid-year by the Trump administration take effect, Monroe’s Mojo Outdoors shares their challenges. The tariffs, a tax on imported goods to balance trade, came after their sales and pricing were set, causing unplanned cost increases. Mojo is working to minimize price hikes by negotiating with Chinese and other suppliers. Long-term, the company may shrink due to market uncertainty and increased costs. Like many businesses, Mojo is exploring alternative suppliers in countries with lower tariffs to control expenses and keep prices affordable for customers. The tariff impact remains uncertain but significant for small businesses.

Where do we belong? A search for queer spaces in Lafayette
SUMMARY: After Bolt’s Downtown closure, Lafayette’s queer community faced challenges finding safe, visible spaces amid political erasure of queer identity. Candice Broussard, a late-coming-out queer artist, found most community spaces were intimate and hidden, discovered through word of mouth, making belonging isolating yet meaningful. Pride Acadiana and queer-owned businesses like Straw Cove Bakery foster inclusivity year-round, not just during Pride Month, offering visibility and belonging. Events like Queer Kickball and grassroots gatherings fill gaps but highlight the lack of permanent safe spaces. With Bolt reopening as The Library, there is hope for more accessible, enduring queer community hubs in Lafayette.
