Motions filed for two execution dates to be set in Mississippi
SUMMARY: Mississippi is seeking execution dates for two men, Willie Jerome Manning and Robert Simon. This would mark the third year in a row with executions in the state after a nine-year period without any. Despite growing trends of other states moving away from the death penalty, Mississippi lawmakers don't foresee a change. Some groups, such as Death Penalty Action, argue that the state should reconsider its stance. However, Senator Brice Wiggins, who worked on the Willie Jerome Manning case, believes the victims' perspective is often overlooked in these discussions. The Office of Capital Post-Conviction Counsel claims that evidence suggesting Manning's innocence is being disregarded.

Court upholds conviction of Mississippi woman sentenced after victim dies in coma
SUMMARY: Brittany Carter's conviction for second-degree murder in connection to the death of Chornell Mayfield was upheld by the Mississippi Court of Appeals. She was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with 10 years suspended, and an additional five-year term for possession of a stolen firearm. Carter had argued self-defense during her appeal, but the court found the evidence sufficient to support the conviction. Mayfield was left comatose for two years after Carter intentionally struck her with a vehicle in 2017, eventually leading to her death. The court affirmed Carter's conviction and sentence, finding no errors in the trial court.
