Mississippi University for Women name change might fall through amid backlash
SUMMARY: The Mississippi University for Women is considering a name change, but the proposed name, Mississippi Brightwell University, faced backlash on social media. President Nora Miller is reviewing feedback and reiterates the commitment to a name that aligns with the university's mission and diverse community. Alumni and faculty oppose using directional or historic names, believing they don't reflect the university's uniqueness. Suggestions like the University of Northern Mississippi, Callaway State University, and Welty University were rejected due to naming guidelines. Lawmakers indicate that a more universally accepted name would likely pass legislative approval, and any changes need to be decided before May 5 to implement by the 2024-25 academic year.

Mississippi lawmakers not to challenge legislation vetoed by Reeves
SUMMARY: On Monday, the final day to veto measures from Mississippi's 2024 legislative session, Governor Tate Reeves rejected several bills, highlighting his veto of Senate Bill 2180. SB 2180 would have eased restrictions on public demonstrations and added a judge for misdemeanor cases in the Capitol Complex Improvement District. Reeves expressed concerns about the bill hindering Capitol Police's cooperation with ICE. Despite unclear wording in the bill regarding Capitol Police's enforcement of city ordinances, lawmakers, including Rep. Trey Lamar, agree with the Governor's priorities on crime prevention. The legislative leaders opted not to reconvene the next day for overriding vetoes.
