Mississippi teachers reap rewards as state lottery boosts education funds
SUMMARY: The Coast Business Council discusses a partnership that will be announced later that evening. The partnership involves the second-largest Powerball jackpot in history, with lucky numbers to be chosen that night. The jackpot is worth over $1.7 billion and will go to the lucky winner. However, even if someone doesn't win, the lottery proceeds will still benefit the community, particularly the education enhancement fund. Teachers are able to use these funds to purchase materials for hands-on and exciting student learning activities. In the last fiscal year alone, the lottery paid out over $122 million to the state, with $43 million going to teachers and $80 million to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
More than $1.7 billion dollars will be up for grabs…but what happens if there isn't a winner?

Local shrimpers say conditions not yet ideal for 2024 season
SUMMARY: Many shrimpers from the coast are heading west this weekend as Louisiana's inshore shrimp season opened on Thursday, while Mississippi waters remain closed. Min Trong, who sells shrimp from his van in Long Beach on weekends, is preparing to open a seafood store. He notes that for the second consecutive year, shrimping conditions have been less than ideal, driving prices down. Factors like excessive freshwater and wind are affecting shrimp availability. Trong anticipates Mississippi's shrimp season to open around mid-June but felt last year's season started too early. Shrimp prices have remained low for the past two years.
Minh Troung and other shrimpers say it'll be a few weeks before conditions are right for shrimping in the Mississippi Sound.
