Mississippi lawmakers discuss future of PERS
SUMMARY: Mississippi Senate lawmakers heard from PERS about the $25 billion in unfunded liabilities in the system. PERS Executive Director spoke about a direct appropriation and the possibility of a “fifth tier” benefit plan for future state employees. The Tier Five plan would include a reduced employer contribution rate and no guarantee to a cost-of-living adjustment. He emphasized that it's a long-term solution and not a quick fix for the next generation, but he believes it would better sustain PERS long term. This comes after concerns about the financial sustainability of PERS since Summer 2023.

SUMMARY: Logan Love, a six-year-old boy from Jackson, Mississippi, tragically drowned at Ross Barnett Reservoir's Lakeshore Park on May 25. His mother, Tehan Ford, recounted that Logan disappeared after playing near the water and couldn't be found before being pulled from the reservoir. Despite being transported to River Oaks Hospital, Logan did not survive. Ford, who is grappling with her only child's death, has sought therapy to manage her grief and suicidal thoughts. She described Logan as a joyful and resilient child, even during illness. Logan was a student at Lake Elementary School in Jackson.

SUMMARY: Jackson police are investigating the fatal shooting of 38-year-old Frank Bozeman III, which occurred on May 31 in the 900 block of Arbor Vista Boulevard. Bozeman was found shot multiple times in his home. Detective Tommie Brown indicated that the suspects are believed to be two Black males driving a black Chevy SUV. Authorities are seeking information and have urged anyone with details about the incident to contact the Jackson Police Department at 601-960-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS (8477).
