Mississippi governor set to release proposal to help financially struggling hospitals
SUMMARY: Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves is set to release a proposal aimed at helping financially struggling hospitals in the state, despite facing criticism for opposing Medicaid expansion. Mississippi is one of 10 states that have not expanded Medicaid to low-wage workers. Reeves has opposed Medicaid expansion, arguing that he does not want to add more people to a government program he derides as “welfare.” Health officials estimate that Mississippi could receive about $1 billion a year from the federal government for Medicaid expansion. The state has faced hospital closures, with 24 rural hospitals currently at immediate risk of closure due to financial problems.
