Mississippi GOP governor says his plan would aid hospitals; Democrat pushes for Medicaid expansion

SUMMARY: Mississippi Governor, Tate Reeves, held a news conference to announce a new Medicaid reimbursement plan that aims to generate $700 million for Mississippi hospitals. The plan includes two initiatives: the Mississippi Hospital Access Program, which provides direct payments to hospitals in the Medicaid managed care delivery system, and an initiative to supplement Medicaid base payment rates for hospitals by reimbursing inpatient and outpatient hospital services. The plan is pending approval from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and, if approved, would be effective from July 1, 2023. Democratic supporters expressed skepticism about the governor’s announcement, accusing him of trying to sway voters.

Mississippi Republican Gov. Tate Reeves released a proposal Thursday aimed at helping some of the state’s financially struggling hospitals, even as the Democrat who is trying to unseat him has spent months hammering Reeves for opposing Medicaid expansion in one of the poorest states in the nation.

Safe Haven Baby Box opens in Gluckstadt

SUMMARY: On Wednesday, the city of Gluckstadt unveiled a new Safe Haven Baby Box in the parking lot of its new Police Station and Municipal Court. Funded by CPS Pools and Spas and community donors, the baby box offers a safe way for individuals to surrender infants anonymously, removing shame and blame. Mayor and residents expressed gratitude, citing the box as a vital alternative to save lives.
