Scams on the rise: Mississippians urged to be cautious when holiday shopping
SUMMARY: As the holiday season approaches, Mississippians are warned to be vigilant against scams targeting personal information. The IRS, alongside its Security Summit partners, promotes the ninth annual National Tax Security Awareness Week, advising taxpayers to exercise caution during holiday shopping and the upcoming tax season. Scammers use sophisticated tactics, such as phishing emails disguised as delivery alerts or IRS communications, to steal sensitive data. To protect against fraud, shoppers are encouraged to use secure websites, avoid public Wi-Fi, update security software, and employ strong passwords and multi-factor authentication. Reporting suspected scams to law enforcement is also recommended.
