SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS) has received federal approval to replace stolen Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for victims of fraud. The theft usually occurs through scams where scammers obtain SNAP EBT numbers and PINs to access benefits. Starting in August 2023, eligible recipients can have their stolen benefits replaced, up to the amount stolen or two months' worth of benefits. Most eligible households will receive replacement benefits within 10 days. To report theft and prevent further incidents, MDHS recommends avoiding simple PINs, changing PINs frequently, keeping the PIN secret, checking the EBT account regularly for unauthorized charges, and inspecting card reading machines for suspicious overlays.
