Mar-Jac Poultry being sued by mother of teen killed at Hattiesburg processing plant
SUMMARY: Edilma Ramirez, mother of 16-year-old Duvan Perez, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Mar-Jac Poultry in Hattiesburg after her son died in July 2023 while cleaning a machine. Perez was pulled into the machinery which was still energized, suffering fatal injuries. The lawsuit seeks damages for the incident, which OSHA attributes to the company's safety violations, citing 14 serious and 3 other-than-serious issues, proposing $212,646 in penalties. Onin Staffing, the contractor that hired Perez, is also a defendant, amidst claims that they were unaware of Perez being a minor. This is the plant's third death since 2020.

Mississippi State researchers aid in documented sighting of Great White off Alabama coast
SUMMARY: Researchers from Mississippi State University assisted in the significant sighting of a juvenile female Great White shark, named “Miss Pawla,” off the Alabama coast. The eight-foot-long shark was observed near an artificial reef zone in approximately 150 feet of water. Miss Pawla, about 15 years old, was first seen in mid-April. Great Whites are not commonly found in the Gulf of Mexico, but recent sightings have sparked discussions among experts about the species possibly adapting to the area. This event marks the first documented Great White sighting at that specific reef by scientists. Research was funded by the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium and Alabama's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
