Mar-Jac Poultry being sued by mother of teen killed at Hattiesburg processing plant

SUMMARY: Edilma Ramirez, mother of 16-year-old Duvan Perez, has filed a wrongful against Mar-Jac Poultry in Hattiesburg after her son died in July 2023 while cleaning a machine. Perez was pulled into the machinery which was still energized, suffering fatal injuries. The lawsuit seeks damages for the incident, which OSHA attributes to the company's safety violations, citing 14 serious and 3 other-than-serious issues, proposing $212,646 in penalties. Onin Staffing, the contractor that hired Perez, is also a defendant, amidst claims that they were unaware of Perez being a minor. This is the plant's third death since 2020.
