Madison County engineers working on flood solution
SUMMARY: Madison County officials provided an update on their plans to address flooding in the county, particularly in the city of Canton. After flooding in 2022 damaged homes and businesses, a five-year plan was developed to tackle the issue. Engineers identified 42 drainage problem areas, including seven in Canton. Planning began in December, and the design phase is expected to start within the next seven months. The options considered to mitigate flooding include building flood prevention structures, constructing wide channels to remove water faster, or eliminating the risk altogether. The project may also include the development of a recreation park around a new water retention area. The timeframe for completion is a concern for residents, but engineers assure that they are working aggressively to expedite the process. Environmental surveys are underway, and there may be a need to buy out some homes to complete the project. The County Supervisor mentioned previous instances of home buyouts in Canton due to flooding concerns. The project has received 23.5 million dollars in federal funding.

SUMMARY: Months after gas explosions destroyed homes and cost a woman her life in South Jackson, investigation into the incidents revealed that natural gas lines in the city need repairs. Atmos Energy identified gas leaks in the area before the explosions, but considered them non-hazardous. The fallout from the explosions has led to concerns about gas pipeline safety in the city and statewide. Atmos Energy claims to prioritize safety and invest in enhancements, but concerns remain about the extent of the gas leak problem beyond Jackson. Public Service Commissioner Decatur Stamps emphasized the importance of safety measures such as calling 911 if gas is smelled and calling 811 before digging.
