Local students build boats and race for Free STEM Saturday

SUMMARY: Young students in South Mississippi participated in a unique STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) learning opportunity presented by the Department of Defense, the Hancock County NAACP, and STEMNOLA. The students built battery-powered boats and learned hands-on about buoyancy and density. The event was commended for allowing students to engage with the world of technology within their community. The Hancock County NAACP anticipates presenting more events like this in the future.

SUMMARY: Ten Army and three Air Force cadets from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) ROTC were commissioned as Second Lieutenants. The Army ceremony at Camp Shelby featured Major General Janson D. Boyles, while the Air Force ceremony on campus featured Brigadier General Mary-Kathryn Haddad. LTC Juan J. Ortiz praised the Army cadets for their leadership, and Lt. Col. Sheena Puleali'i commended the Air Force cadets for their commitment. Distinguished Military Graduate 2LT Jeremiah J. Parker expressed pride in his training and future goals. Commissioned cadets include 2LT Miruna Avram, 2LT Braxton Bailey, 2LT Jada Fairley, among others.
