Local librarians making mats for the homeless

SUMMARY: Retired librarian Karen Shaw from the University of Southern Mississippi is using collected plastic bags for a good cause. Known as ‘the bag lady', Shaw repurposes plastic bags donated by students into plastic mats, which are then donated to the homeless. Colleague Kelley Hartfield helps crocheting the mats. Each mat can use between 600 and 900 bags and are designed to be used under sleeping bags or blankets to prevent moisture from the ground.

SUMMARY: Ten Army and three Air Force cadets from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) ROTC were commissioned as Second Lieutenants. The Army ceremony at Camp Shelby featured Major General Janson D. Boyles, while the Air Force ceremony on campus featured Brigadier General Mary-Kathryn Haddad. LTC Juan J. Ortiz praised the Army cadets for their leadership, and Lt. Col. Sheena Puleali'i commended the Air Force cadets for their commitment. Distinguished Military Graduate 2LT Jeremiah J. Parker expressed pride in his training and future goals. Commissioned cadets include 2LT Miruna Avram, 2LT Braxton Bailey, 2LT Jada Fairley, among others.
