Jackson City Council earmarks money for firefighter raises, but JFD will also cut positions

SUMMARY: The Council of Jackson, Mississippi has approved pay raises for firefighters in their budget hearing. The was met with applause from council members and the public. The Jackson will up $1.4 million by eliminating 31 vacant positions, while the city will contribute $1.6 million, totaling $3 million for the pay raises. The money for the raises was taken from the Parks and Recreation budget. Fire captains will a starting pay raise of over $10,730, fire lieutenants over $7,700, firefighter 2's nearly $7,500, and firefighter 1's over $9,000. The budget still needs final approval.
