Inflation cancels out Mississippi teacher pay raise
SUMMARY: A recent report from Education Advocacy Organization Mississippi first revealed that the historic teacher pay raise implemented in 2022 has been largely nullified by high inflation rates. Although the raise increased teacher salaries by over $5,000 and brought Mississippi above the regional average, many teachers still left the state due to the effects of inflation. The report suggests that teacher pay should be a continuous effort to keep up with inflation and prevent teachers from seeking employment elsewhere. Additionally, a survey included in the report showed that over half of teachers are likely to leave the classroom within the next year, and financial insecurities persist despite the pay raise.
