SUMMARY: Mississippi has the lowest rate of adolescents receiving the HPV vaccine, according to the CDC. Tanya Fitz, the president of the Mississippi Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, explains that HPV is a virus that causes warts and almost all adults will have been exposed to it in their lifetime. The HPV vaccine provides immunity against the virus and protects against multiple types of cancers. However, there is stigma associated with the vaccine because many people believe it is only associated with cervical cancer and is sexually transmitted. Fitz emphasizes that the vaccine is important because it prevents over 90% of HPV-related cancers.
