HB 691 could create board to oversee investigations of law officers
SUMMARY: A new bill, House Bill 691, allows for a new board to oversee investigations of law enforcement accused of wrongdoing in Mississippi. This board, part of the state's officer certification board, can investigate officers and potentially change their certification status based on their findings. The board will establish a hearing panel to conduct investigations and provide recommendations. The bill also includes a 20-hour training requirement for board members. This legislation is a response to cases like the “Goon Squad” in Rankin County, where law enforcement officers were found guilty of violating civil rights. Governor Tate Reeves is expected to sign the bill into law.
