Gulfport receives funds to make a Safe Haven Baby Box
SUMMARY: The Gulfport city council unanimously accepted donated funds for a safe haven baby box at fire station 9, the first in Mississippi. The donor, Gerald Sanchez, shared his personal experience of child abuse and the need for a safe alternative for distressed children. Mississippi already has a safe haven law, but emergency services cannot ensure the conditions in which babies are dropped off. The baby box provides a safe place for babies to be left at any time, ensuring they are cared for and protected. The installation of the baby box is still in early planning stages in Gulfport.
