Gulfport mayor proposes raises for fire and police dept. in new budget
SUMMARY: Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes has proposed salary increases for the city’s firefighters and police officers in his budget for the next fiscal year. This move is part of an attempt to support recruitment and retention within these departments, which have reportedly been facing challenges. Hewes did not specify the amount of the proposed raises, but stated they would be competitive. The city is still in the process of finalising the budget.

Library book returned after 82 years. Note says, ‘Grandma won’t be able to pay for it anymore’
SUMMARY: A library book titled “Your Child, His Family, and Friends” was returned to the San Antonio Public Library nearly 82 years after being borrowed in July 1943. The borrower’s relative explained it was originally checked out by their grandmother, who took it when she moved to Mexico City for work at the US Embassy. The book, a parental guide by Frances Bruce Strain, was accompanied by a note saying, “Grandma won’t be able to pay for it anymore.” The library waived overdue fines, which could have amounted to nearly $900, and will display the book before selling it to support library services. The longest overdue book was returned after 288 years in England.

Erin weakens to post-tropical cyclone, moving out to sea as it batters East Coast with wind, waves
SUMMARY: Hurricane Erin, now a post-tropical cyclone with 90 mph winds, battered the East Coast from the Carolinas to New England with strong winds, waves, and dangerous rip currents. Despite its large size—twice that of an average hurricane—it stayed offshore, limiting damage. Nantucket experienced 45 mph winds, ferry services were canceled, and beaches closed due to high surf. North Carolina’s Outer Banks saw dune breaches and flooding but no major structural damage. Coastal flood warnings extended to the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Erin caused tidal flooding in New Jersey but spared widespread destruction. Originating near Cape Verde, Erin remained large but gradually weakened as it moved northeast.

Florida must stop expanding ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ immigration center, judge says
SUMMARY: U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams issued a preliminary injunction halting construction at a new immigrant detention center in the Florida Everglades, citing environmental concerns and inadequate justification for the location. The facility, rapidly built on a remote training airport, holds several hundred detainees but was designed for 3,000. Environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe sued to stop the project, highlighting threats to sensitive wetlands and habitats. Judge Williams ordered the state and federal defendants to transfer detainees within 60 days and prohibited adding new detainees, allowing only safety-related repairs. Florida filed an appeal, while the state insists the project falls under state, not federal, environmental law.
