Former MDOC prisoner files federal lawsuit
SUMMARY: Former inmate Susie Balfour has filed a civil rights and medical malpractice lawsuit against the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Balfour claims that the department delayed and denied her healthcare during her 33-year prison sentence. She was forced to mix harmful chemicals while on cleaning duty, which included known carcinogens. After experiencing breast pain, her requests for follow-up medical care were repeatedly ignored. Balfour was eventually diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, which had gone untreated for years. The lawsuit alleges negligence by the three contracted healthcare providers with the MDOC. Other former inmates joined Balfour in seeking justice for those still in prison.
