Florida discontinues manatee winter feeding program after seagrass conditions improve
SUMMARY: A two-year experimental feeding program for starving Florida manatees will not immediately resume this winter due to improved conditions for the mammals and the recovery of the seagrass they depend on. Thousands of pounds of lettuce were previously fed to manatees near a Florida power plant, but this winter the program will not restart due to seagrass recovery and fewer manatees in poor physical condition. The manatees faced a starvation problem due to widespread pollution triggering algae blooms that killed off the seagrass. State and federal dollars are being invested in projects to restore the seagrass and protect the manatees. Environmental groups are pushing for the manatee to be relisted as endangered.

SUMMARY: Ten Army and three Air Force cadets from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) ROTC were commissioned as Second Lieutenants. The Army ceremony at Camp Shelby featured Major General Janson D. Boyles, while the Air Force ceremony on campus featured Brigadier General Mary-Kathryn Haddad. LTC Juan J. Ortiz praised the Army cadets for their leadership, and Lt. Col. Sheena Puleali'i commended the Air Force cadets for their commitment. Distinguished Military Graduate 2LT Jeremiah J. Parker expressed pride in his training and future goals. Commissioned cadets include 2LT Miruna Avram, 2LT Braxton Bailey, 2LT Jada Fairley, among others.
