FDA approves new sickle cell treatments

SUMMARY: The FDA approved two gene therapies for sickle cell disease in the United States, giving hope to the 100,000 patients living with the blood disorder. Despite the approval, concerns have been raised about the therapies’ cost, coverage by insurance and Medicaid, and the duration of treatment. Patients also often face long wait times for care in emergency rooms. With CRISPR technology, cells can be removed from the body, edited in a lab, and then returned to the patient, offering a new treatment option. The FDA also approved the gene therapy for those 12 years and older, and the goal is to find an immediate cure for all patients.
