EPA clears MDEQ of racial discrimination
SUMMARY: The EPA found no wrongdoing by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality in response to accusations of racial discrimination in funding wastewater infrastructure programs. The Southern Poverty Law Center filed a complaint against MDEQ and Mississippi, claiming a violation of non-discrimination regulations. The EPA investigation found insufficient evidence to conclude that MDEQ violated Title VI. MDEQ defended its actions, stating they followed all regulations and were already in the process of making improvements. The NAACP maintains that the residents of Jackson were discriminated against and starved of resources, including safe drinking water.
