Enhancing Columbia PD's Special Care Project
SUMMARY: The Columbia Police Department recently completed training focused on finding missing residents with special needs, such as those with autism or dementia. The training, conducted by The Shepherds, included tabletop and field exercises to enhance skills like evidence preservation and interviews. This training is part of the Department’s Special Care Project, which maintains a database of information on local individuals with special needs provided by family members. This database helps officers respond appropriately to calls involving special needs individuals. The Department also periodically checks on individuals in the database and provides assistance, such as hot soup on cold days.
Columbia Police officers are hoping some recently completed training will help them find any local residents with special needs who go missing.
