Volunteers travel miles to help Columbus man fix his home
SUMMARY: Glen Spitler, a retired U.S. veteran from Columbus, Mississippi, needed urgent roof repairs for his aging home. Persistent leaks over five years caused additional damage, and his insurance wouldn't cover the repairs due to the roof's age. With assistance from the United Way of the Greater Golden Triangle and a dedicated volunteer group from Pennsylvania's Mennonite Services, Spitler's home is now being repaired. Spitler expressed immense gratitude, noting he can finally feel secure. United Way Volunteer Director Quan Walker stressed the importance of their community service programs, encouraging year-round volunteerism to address local health hazards. Fun in the sun can lead to skin cancer without proper protection
SUMMARY: Dr. Phillip Hooker, owner of the Skin and Allergy Clinic in West Point, highlights the prevalence of skin cancer, often stemming from sun exposure. He advises covering up and using sunscreen, emphasizing that sunscreen only screens, not blocks, sun rays. Joe Miller, a safety coordinator at 4-County Electric Power Association, prioritizes outdoor safety for linemen, providing safety glasses and hard hats. Hooker advocates for monthly self-examinations to detect potential melanomas early. Miller notes the severe consequences of neglecting sun protection, such as significant skin damage requiring dermatologist intervention. Hooker stresses that each sunburn increases skin cancer risk.
