City Council opposed to water utility authority
SUMMARY: The Jackson City Council unanimously approved a resolution opposing Senate Bill 26-28, which would create a regional authority to run the city's water and sewer system with appointees from the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, excluding input from Jackson leaders. The council believes the bill violates the federal stipulated order between the city, the U.S. Justice Department, and the EPA, which currently places interim third-party administrator Ted Henifin in charge of the system. Mayor Lumumba is calling for the Senate bill to be shut down, as it undermines the current agreement and control of the water and sewer system.
