Church of God in Christ's beginnings in Mississippi
SUMMARY: The St Paul's Church on Highway 17 in Lexington, built in 1907, has a rich history as the birthplace of the Church of God in Christ. Bishop Charles Mason emerged as a preacher in this church, and today it is led by Bishop William Dean Jr. The church has a long history, starting with Mason being invited to straighten out sermons that caused division in the community. The church has modernized with television equipment for live feeds, but still holds on to its historical roots. The church's influence extends beyond its walls, as it has been the site of significant events in history, including the funeral of Emmett Till and the last speech of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The church's importance is recognized as the “mother church” of the Church of God in Christ.
