Byram offers $5M to Jackson to buy water infrastructure
SUMMARY: Byram Mayor Richard White is pushing for his city to disconnect from the Jackson water system. He has offered Jackson $5 million for the water infrastructure currently serving Byram. Mayor White wants the transaction to take place before the qualifying deadline for the 2025 municipal elections. He stated that Byram is prepared to start drilling wells and installing tanks once they secure their own water source. Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba of Jackson has not yet confirmed whether the city will accept the offer, but he wants to ensure that Jackson is appropriately compensated for its investment. Byram has been affected by water outages due to Jackson's system failures and line breaks in recent years.

Burn bans cover much of Mississippi until further notice
SUMMARY: Calhoun County in Mississippi has joined several other counties in implementing a burn ban due to severe drought conditions. The lack of rainfall and low humidity levels are increasing the risk of fires in the area. The ban prohibits any outdoor burning unless controlled by the Mississippi Forestry Commission. Fires can easily start in these dry conditions, even from something as small as a tossed cigarette or loose chains on a trailer. Farmers are unable to burn their fields, which may be frustrating but is necessary for safety. Other counties affected by the burn ban include Chickasaw, Grenada, Lee, and Monroe.
