Bill passes to include ASL as high school foreign language option
SUMMARY: American Sign Language is now recognized as a foreign language in Mississippi high schools, fulfilling the foreign language requirement. This change, signed into law by Governor Reeves, aims to promote inclusivity both inside and outside the classroom. The bill was authored by Senator Angela Hill and requested by teacher Miranda Loveless, who believes that ASL will help students better communicate with the community. Loveless emphasizes the importance of learning ASL not only for communication but also for understanding the culture. 40 other states recognize ASL as a language, and Mississippi is now catching up, striving to create a more inclusive environment for all.

On April 15, 2024, Governor Tate Reeves signed Senate Bill 2339 into law.
