‘All of the sudden, it just blew up’; handheld firework explodes, burns woman

SUMMARY: On the 4th of July, Ocean Springs resident, Emily Blanchard, suffered burns from a Roman Candle accident, leading to an emergency room visit. Blanchard and her boyfriend bought two firework devices, but the second one malfunctioned, causing injuries. Dr. Gregory Patino, with two decades of experience in 4th of July medical emergencies, reported multiple hand injuries from people holding fireworks during their ignition. Common fireworks-related injuries include hand injuries, eye injuries from lack of protective glasses, and fireworks tipping over into crowds. Despite her injuries, Blanchard is receiving treatment and is expected to fully recover, vowing to avoid handheld fireworks in the future.

Last night around 8 p.m., a Roman candle gone wrong put Emily Blanchard in the emergency room — and she isn’t the only one.
