Ag. commissioner and legislature at odds over bills dictating how money is spent at state fairgrounds
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s legislature is clashing with Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson over bills seeking oversight on fairgrounds’ spending. Bills HB 1357 and SB 2361 question Gipson’s control over private donations and fairground events. Gipson fears the legislation could deter sponsors, reducing private investment or increasing taxpayer funding for fairgrounds and the Dixie National Rodeo. Briggs Hopson, Senate Appropriations Chair, counters that it’s about equal treatment for state agencies. The bills also introduce a requirement for naming rights approval by top state officials. Despite Gipson’s opposition, both bills are advancing through the legislature with significant support.
