Purvis group locates burial site for 1908 tornado victims
SUMMARY: 116 years ago, an EF4 tornado hit the town of Purvis in 1908, killing at least 75 people who were buried in an unmarked mass grave. The grave location was recently discovered with the help of ground-penetrating radar after decades of searching. The West Lamar Water Association located three graves covering a 45-foot area, where tornado victims were believed to be buried. With funds secured from the Lamar County Board of Supervisors, headstones and markers were placed on the graves in February. The Historical Society aims to eventually identify some of the victims buried in that tragic tornado.
