Bill heading to governor’s desk designating Kemp’s ridley and American Quarter Horse as state symbols
SUMMARY: A Mississippi bill proposes designating the American Quarter Horse and Kemp's ridley sea turtle as new state symbols. Senate Bill 2143 was amended to include the Kemp's ridley, recognized as the most endangered sea turtle species, which inhabits Mississippi Gulf Coast waters. The state engages in conservation efforts through organizations like the Mississippi Aquarium and the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies. If Governor Tate Reeves signs the bill, these symbols will be added to a list that includes the mockingbird and blueberry. The American Quarter Horse is noted for being well-suited to rodeo events, aligning with the state's prominent rodeo culture.
