Happy May! Happy May Day! Who Remembers?
SUMMARY: Several years ago, Scott Hunter shared a photograph of himself and Christine Mizell dressed for Lucedale's May Day celebration circa 1961. Judy Wilder, a local resident, recalls the celebration that marked the start of summer, featuring events like the maypole dance. Hunter, who later became a football quarterback and a news celebrity, and Wilder, who spent her career in education, both cherish the memories of their youth in Lucedale. Although May Day is no longer celebrated there, the old photographs and memories serve as a nostalgic reminder of the community's past traditions.

Preserving Mississippi History One Tree at a Time
SUMMARY: Superior Artisan Wood, co-owned by Chad Fletcher and Allen Murphree, transforms discarded timber into stunning wooden slabs for various uses, avoiding the landfill. Their Mississippi-based business has grown from a side project into a full-fledged operation, focusing on crafting and preservation. Utilizing a Lucas Model 830 sawmill, they handle massive logs for diverse creations, including kitchen countertops and charcuterie boards. Their work includes processing historically significant timber, like a log from Tammy Wynette's property. Emphasizing sustainability, they encourage people not to discard trees but to repurpose them into meaningful items. Their unique approach makes them the only certified urban wood supplier in the state, collaborating on personal and historical projects, and they have been featured on HGTV's “Hometown.”
