A proposal to merge 2 universities fizzles in the Mississippi Senate

SUMMARY: The proposal to merge Mississippi for Women into Mississippi University was rejected by the state Senate, but the future of MUW is still uncertain as a bill was passed to study potential closures of some of Mississippi's eight public universities. Senate are concerned about the financial sustainability of all universities due to declining birth rates and school enrollment. Another bill to upgrade MUW and Mississippi School for Math and Science was introduced but ultimately defeated. The renaming of MUW to Mississippi Brightwell University or Wynbridge State University of Mississippi was also paused due to criticism.

USM Army and Air Force ROTC programs host Commissioning Ceremonies

SUMMARY: Ten Army and three Force cadets from the of Southern Mississippi (USM) ROTC were commissioned as Second Lieutenants. The Army ceremony at Camp Shelby Major General Janson D. Boyles, while the Air Force ceremony on campus featured Brigadier General Mary-Kathryn Haddad. LTC Juan J. Ortiz praised the Army cadets for their leadership, and Lt. Col. Sheena Puleali'i commended the Air Force cadets for their commitment. Distinguished Military Graduate 2LT Jeremiah J. Parker expressed pride in his and future goals. Commissioned cadets include 2LT Miruna Avram, 2LT Braxton Bailey, 2LT Jada Fairley, among others.
