Mississippi lawmakers not to challenge legislation vetoed by Reeves
SUMMARY: On Monday, the final day to veto measures from Mississippi's 2024 legislative session, Governor Tate Reeves rejected several bills, highlighting his veto of Senate Bill 2180. SB 2180 would have eased restrictions on public demonstrations and added a judge for misdemeanor cases in the Capitol Complex Improvement District. Reeves expressed concerns about the bill hindering Capitol Police's cooperation with ICE. Despite unclear wording in the bill regarding Capitol Police's enforcement of city ordinances, lawmakers, including Rep. Trey Lamar, agree with the Governor's priorities on crime prevention. The legislative leaders opted not to reconvene the next day for overriding vetoes.
