The humane society is working to ensure these dogs find loving homes and receive necessary treatment. Heartworms can cause heart failure or death if left untreated, and the shelter uses the slow-kill method of treatment due to cost. Donations to the Have a Heart fund help treat heartworm-positive dogs, and monthly preventative measures are recommended for all pets.

SUMMARY: Ten Army and three Air Force cadets from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) ROTC were commissioned as Second Lieutenants. The Army ceremony at Camp Shelby featured Major General Janson D. Boyles, while the Air Force ceremony on campus featured Brigadier General Mary-Kathryn Haddad. LTC Juan J. Ortiz praised the Army cadets for their leadership, and Lt. Col. Sheena Puleali'i commended the Air Force cadets for their commitment. Distinguished Military Graduate 2LT Jeremiah J. Parker expressed pride in his training and future goals. Commissioned cadets include 2LT Miruna Avram, 2LT Braxton Bailey, 2LT Jada Fairley, among others.
