Hawkins' students being moved to Lillie Burney
SUMMARY: Sims will become the chief on February 1, and there is an anticipated Arctic blast for next week. Due to insufficient heating, students from Hawkins Elementary will move to the Lillie Burney School site starting January 18th. There is no timetable for when students might be able to return to Hawkins, and on Tuesday and Wednesday, Hawkins students will be virtual. Parents are urged to talk to the teachers and school administration for guidance. District leaders are in touch with families and will continue to share updates. It is expected that Sims will meet with the superintendent tomorrow for further information.

SUMMARY: The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Houston Career and Technology Education Center for renovations to its engineering lab. The funds will be used to upgrade air conditioning units and the roof, enhancing student comfort and learning conditions. This improvement will prevent the need for students to relocate during hot summer months. The renovations are set to be completed by August 2025. TVA, along with its partner, Natches Trace Electric Power Association, is dedicated to supporting local educational initiatives.

The 51st Vaman Sweet Potato Festival kicks off Saturday, featuring musical entertainment, antique shows, a 5K run, sweet potato treat tasting, and a pie-eating contest. Additionally, the Annual Pittsboro Day in Calhoun County will offer family-friendly entertainment. Fans of dinosaurs can enjoy the Fossil Road Show at the Orand-Donn Museum in Tupelo, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday.
