Hardy Sims named new chief of police in City of Hattiesburg
SUMMARY: Hattisburg Police Chief Peggy Cely announced her retirement after 30+ years in law enforcement. The new chief, Hardy Sims, was appointed and is a Hattisburg native with 30 years of experience at the Hattisburg Police Department. He is described as knowledgeable, calm, and detail-oriented. Mayor Tobias congratulated Chief Sims and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the department. Chief Sims plans to build a team to make Hattisburg the safest city in the Southeast. His appointment will be official next Tuesday and will take effect on February 1st. This appointment is seen as a positive message to other officers about opportunities for advancement within the department.
The announcement was made by Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker during a press conference Thursday afternoon.

Homeowner shot after confronting teens trying to steal a car
SUMMARY: Overnight, a homeowner in Jackson was shot after confronting a group of teenagers attempting to steal her car. The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on Bonita Drive near Queen Eleanor Lane. Police report that one of the teenagers pulled a gun and shot the homeowner in the stomach. The victim has been taken to a hospital.
